THE SPIRIT OF THE FUN HOUSE

"Come one come all!" My garment was inspired by the barker at the entrance to the fun house, enticing you to enter and experience floors that shift under your weight, never-ending halls of distorting mirrors, stairs that move up and down, disorienting rooms with crooked walls and floors, and countless other optical illusions. In this piece I wanted to experiment with distortion of shape, structure, surface design, and proportion to create a garment that embodies the "Spirit of the Fun House." Just as the fun house plays with spatial relationships to distort the familiar proportions of rooms and hallways, this outfit creates optical illusions that distort the proportions of the body. For this design I body scanned my model and created a 1/2 scale dress form to her exact size. I then draped and digitized the pattern in Optex, to enlarge it to full scale to laser cut the muslins.
