Heartstrings

“The Red String of Fate never disappears, and it stays permanently tied despite time and distance. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to meet that person, nor is it important how much time passes without seeing each other, it doesn’t even matter if you live at the other end of the world….” – Chinese Proverb

This installation piece utilizes technology, fiber art, and sculptural construction. The composition explores and evokes the complexity and intimacy of love. This connection is dynamic and complicated due to the fears and freedoms exchanged in a relationship. In expressing this, I am inspired by the Chinese Proverb, The Red String of Fate. This proverb expresses the powerful spiritual connection that binds two people together across time and space.

Heartstrings explores the dichotomous nature of love. It models the dynamic give and take implicit in the loving relationship between two people Allowing yourself to open your heart to another person can be an intimidating experience. A loving partnership necessitates some reduction in each person’s individuality. At the same time, trusting one another and learning from each other allows for a level of growth and connection un-achievable on your own. Together facing each other’s uncertainties; Together overcoming each other’s fears; Together freeing each other through acceptance. This back and forth exchange of exposing each other’s insecurities, ambitions and passions is a beautiful process that Heartstrings

represents.

The two figures have been sculpted from 16-gauge iron wire; manipulating positive and negative space to create human figures. The transparency of the figures represents the transparency required between two people in love necessary to foster full understanding and trust. Without any boundaries, this spiritual connection can grow and move freely between them. The figures have been positioned sitting back to back representing he initial fear and hesitance that comes with two people falling in love. But as they reach around to hold each other’s hands all possibilities begin to grow. The bloom of flowers embodies the growth and roots of the relationship coming from the heart. Love truly is one of the most dynamic expressions of fears and of freedoms.
