TODAY FREEDOM, TOMORROW TERROR

My collection is inspired by the French Revolution Reign of Terror. I want my collection to draw upon the historical dress of the time, while exposing the violence, and fear that the people during this reign experienced. The term "terrorisme” was coined during the French Revolution. The word has grown and developed throughout time. Today, terror still exists in the back of our minds; we continue to walk and fine line between freedom and terror. While we are living in a world that’s constantly progressing and advancing, there is also an underlying fear that comes with this change- the fear of the unknown.

The asymmetrical sharp hemlines, darts, and design lines represent the blade of the guillotine; which became a major symbol of terror. The irregularity in shapes and details evokes the feeling of being on edge, and the harshness of the terror. The use of dark and rich colors also helps set a mood of the collection. A deep crimson velvet was used as an accent to symbolize the shocking horrors and bloodshed of the time-period. The garments also distort the silhouette of the body, as a person who’s been infected by paranoia distorts their perception of truth. The lining of the coat was a custom printed design created to further embody the terror; photographing hands and layering and reflecting them on Photoshop into a pattern that creates a feeling of claustrophobia, and the mentality that everyone is out to get you.
